SLANG is headed by designers Nathanaël Hamon and Florent Moglia. Since 2000, we’ve worked on a wide range of projects, creating specialized and lasting forms of communication. Our focus is visual identities and the design of editorial, informational and promotional materials. We also initiate work that responds to social needs, cultural issues and typographic visions. Our output has been awarded, published and exhibited worldwide.

I've moved around a lot. My father being French and my mother American, we lived just outside Paris and in a suburb of New York when I was growing up. This naturally gave me an outsider's perspective and an instinct that tells me there isn't only one way of doing things.

It was towards the end of my art history studies at Wesleyan University that I discovered graphic design. The dynamic and typographically-rich posters an- nouncing events on campus caught my eye not only because of how they looked but I also liked the combination of artistic and mechanical production.
It was then that I realized graphic design was what I wanted to do.

After graduating in May 1995, I wanted to discover the West Coast and moved to San Francisco. I held positions at CNET and The Gap working in web design and experimented with typography on the side by designing and screenprinting posters and record covers for friends who made music.

My next move brought me to Berlin in 2000. I quickly learned to appreciate the quality of life here: Berlin strikes a good balance between the energy and possi- bilities of a major city and the peace of a smaller one. French citizenship made settling in easy; I set up my freelance practice right away and SLANG was born.

Feeling the need to be part of a team, I joined the advertising agency M&C Saatchi Berlin in 2005 as art director. There I learned about project manage- ment and how to empathize with and satisfy clients' needs.

While being based in Berlin, I maintain close ties to both the US and France. The three cultures that inform my personal and professional life multiply my reference points and capacity to understand a wide range of contexts.

SLANG was revived in 2007 and grew into a collective in 2010 when Florent joined. Together we work towards developing lasting professional partnerships with people with whom we share a common vision.

I started graphic design when I was 10: I would redesign the covers of my videotapes, either because I didn't like the "real" covers or because I felt they were not representative of the movies. So I drew new covers, composing the titles with transparent film, and finalizing my compositions with a photocopier.
I would spend a lot of time drawing, it was my way to explore the world.

A neighbor of our was designer and when began thinking about a university,
I asked him about what he did. He helped me discover the graphic design field and took me to visit a few schools. I decided to study design in Paris, at the Maryse Éloy school of arts. I discovered and experimented with the possibilities offered by the interaction of image and typography, and decided to turn this passion into my profession.

After my studies, starting in 2003, I worked as graphic designer for 5 years at the Studio Atalante and the art publishing house Xavier Barral in Paris. I had the opportunity to work on large-scale cultural events, for whom we created the corporate identity and various communication visuals. I also designed several books and managed their printing, which gave me a great experience in the entire production workflow.

My wife is german, and in 2009 we decided to move to Berlin. The city feels
like a breath of fresh air and gives me a lot of good energy. This newly found multicultural lifestyle influences my work and stimulates me to experiment with new ways to create.

I started learning German and working freelance, primarily on visual identities. At the same time, my goal was to establish a graphic designers' collective. I met Nat shortly after my arrival in Berlin and I found in SLANG an approach and an attitude to which I felt close. We started collaborating in 2010.

Visual communication:
An encounter where we, you, the image and the public are bound together. We’re here to create images that stimulate curiosity, reflection and emotion. We’ll listen, get to know each other’s work, learn, think and create together. We say: We design not for you, but with you.
